PRhyme: DJ Premier, Royce Da 5' 9" & Adrian Younge on Boiler Room

This project captures one of those rare moments when the stars align and everything falls perfectly into place. Royce 5’9″, one of the most technically-advanced MCs in the game paired with DJ Premier who needs no introduction at this point, doing what they do best on a backbone of samples entirely produced by Adrian Younge- the closest thing to a living spring of loops and breaks hip hop may ever get. The result being three masters of their craft combining ingredients for an extraordinary recipe.
Collaborating with each one of them individually was a long time coming, but all three together is simply a blessing. So it was only right for us to shoot at Chung King, one of hip hop’s holy grails, and put together our own dream team of moderators and video/sound team to make this session extra special. The result is one of the most intimate and high caliber rap sessions we’ve had to date, and a marvelous DJ set by Adrian of classic samples, breaks, and loops.

Fight Review: Saul Alvares vs Erislandy Lara

Just for the record, I scored Lara outscoring Canelo by 2 points.  Although I can understand the 2 judges who had it for Lara/Canelo, 115-113.  The judge who had it 117-111 Canelo, was not paying attention at all.

By Butch Gottlieb and Miguel Maravilla at ringside

In a non-title grudge match fought at a contract weight of 155 lbs, former world champion Saul Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) scored a split decision over reigning WBA super welterweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-2-2, 12 KOs) on Saturday night in front of 14,239 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Southpaw Lara mainly jabbed and moved. Canelo pressed the action but didn’t land much early. Lara made Canelo miss badly in round three. Canelo started working the body more in round four. The body attack paid dividends as Lara’s movement slowed dramatically by round six. Canelo cut Lara over the fight eye with an uppercut in round seven. Canelo punished Lara with hard shots in rounds eight and nine. Lara then seemingly got a second wind and the last three rounds were close. Scores were 115-113 Lara, 117-111, 115-113 Canelo.

Fight Review: Cotto v Martinez

In his greatest moment, Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) became the first Puerto Rican boxer to win a world title in four divisions, as he savagely battered WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-3-2, 28 KOs) for nine rounds on Saturday night in front of a sold out crowd of 21,090 at the famous Madison Square Garden in New York City.
In a wild round one, Cotto set the tone by staggering Martinez with a left hook, then knocking him down three times. The champion survived the round, but Cotto continued to violently attack him as the bout progressed. Cotto’s pressure repeatedly pushed Martinez back and he landed almost at will. Martinez was unable to get much going as he was thoroughly outboxed and outpunched by Cotto. Cotto punished Martinez down the stretch. He was credited with another knockdown in round nine when Martinez’ glove touched the canvas. Martinez didn’t come out for round ten. Official time is :06 of round ten.
All three judges had it scored 90-77 for Cotto after nine rounds.

Fall Fight Season Preview

With most fights in the Spring season complete, No Sparring looks ahead to the Fall fight season.

Floyd Mayweather VS Marcos Maidana II

It’s almost a forgone conclusion that the rematch will take place this September. Mayweather has no other options within his division who will be ready to fight and can bring in the kind of money that Maidana can.

Keith Thurman seems to be the only other viable option in terms of contention and availability. Having never fought the type of opponents Maidana or even Khan has, Thurman doesn’t bring the same experience or following 22that either of those two boxers have.

Amir Khan VS Thurman/Porter/Brook

Khan will be back in action in the late fall or early winter. He’ll be looking to earn a shot at Mayweather in May 2015 should Mayweather get by Maidana in their rematch.

Fighting the winner of the yet to be announced IBF title fight Shawn Porter VS Kell Brook would give Khan a chance at scoring the merit he’s looking for to prove his worth in the division. If his opponent is Brook, look for a massive fight in England that will net both boxers a handsome purse. Should Porter continue his excellence, Khan will be matched against a strong and hungry adversary.

Keith Thurman, in need of an opponent and hungry for a chance at the big time, has already begun calling out Khan. The fight is most intriguing for Thurman fans who are eager to see him prove his dominance of lesser opponents on a shaky chin like Khan’s. Thurman’s a dangerous fighter who swings big, yet offers little upside to Khan because of Thurman’s deficient resume. I love watching both boxers and would love to see this one too.

Manny Pacquiao VS Juan Manuel Marquez V/ Ruslan Provodnikov

Pacquiao has climbed back up the ladder and regained his WBO title. Juan Manuel Marquez is the standing #1 contender and has the option of fighting Pacquiao this fall. However, Marquez has flirted with retirement over the last couple of years and is turned off by the notion of fighting Pacquiao again. Should Marquez take another route, say against Brandon Rios, Pacquaio will likely face hard hitting Ruslan Provodnikov instead.

With the climate of boxing politics in constant flux, look for more opponents to be available this summer for both opponents if Golden Boy Promotions goes through a management change.

Adonis Stevenson VS Bernard Hopkins

Yes, I’m looking past Stevenson’s fight against Fonfara on May 31st. Once Adonis rings his bell he’ll be in line for a unification bout against Bernard Hopkins. This fight should provide some fireworks for boxing fans. Locations in Vegas, Montreal, and Atlantic City have already been mentioned as possible landing spots for the mega event. There’s nothing more in boxing I love than a unification fight!

Also look for:

~Danny Garcia will be back in action this fall. His most lucrative options are IBF champ Lamont Peterson; a rematch with Lucas Matthysse; a rematch with Mauricio Herrera.

~Sergio Martinez/Miguel Cotto winner will look to capitalize on their big win with a follow up in the fall. If it’s Sergio, look for Gennady Golovkin to get the nod (may fight each other regardless). If Cotto prevails, a unification with Peter Quillin is an option as is Canelo Alvarez -who is tentavilely scheduled for a November return after his summer fight.

~The Heavyweight division is starting to register a pulse again. KlitschkoStiverne, and the winner of Fury/Chisora will all be back in action this Fall. Don’t sleep on Deontay Wilder either. He’s Stiverne’s #1 challenger at the moment.

~Mikey Garcia and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. are currently in contract disputes with Top Rank. If both have their situations handled this summer, they’ll be due for a fight. Both are fan favorites to watch and always bring us something to talk about aftewards. I can’t wait to see them both in action again.

~Rigondeaux should be a free agent after his summer fight. If he signs with Golden Boy he’ll have the chance to fight Leo Santa Cruz. I expect an exciting fall for the Jr. Featherweight division.

Fight Review: Marquez v Alvarado

By Miguel Maravilla at ringside

In a WBO welterweight eliminator, future Hall of Famer Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) scored a clear twelve round unanimous decision over Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KOs) in front of 12,090 boxing fans on Saturday night as boxing made its triumphant return to the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, California. Alvarado, respecting Marquez’ counter-punching skills, laying back and letting Marquez lead, thus allowing Marquez to dictate the pace and put the first eight rounds in the bank on all three judges’ cards. Marquez dropped Alvarado with a right hand at the end of round eight. Finally, in the true warrior fashion Alvardo is known for, he responded by flooring Marquez in round nine. Tremendously fierce exchanges followed for the rest of that round. Marquez pressed the action and did more in the tenth and went on to win by scores of 117-109, 117-109, 119-108. With the victory, Marquez becomes mandatory challenger to WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao.

We ❤ Retro Media: Vinyl, VHS, Tapes & Film

We live in a digital world that gives us all the media we could possibly dream of at the click of a mouse, yet many people miss the old school physical formats from our past. Listening to vinyl and cassettes allows us to connect with music in a different way than MP3s. VHS and 8mm create visual aesthetics and atmospheres that are difficult to replicate in digital video. And the surprises inherent to analog instant photography help embed an organic quality to the recording of our memories. The challenges these retro formats present to capturing and experiencing media actually enhance our appreciation for the sound or image, making the art we love a bit more intimate, and real.

Fight Review: Manny Pacquiao v Timothy Bradley 2

Ringside by Chris Cozzone
You could make a case that the third man in the ring with Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley, Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, was referee Kenny Bayless. It was obvious, I mean, he was right there, the man in blue, doing such a good job you hardlynoticed he was there.
But you could also make the case that Juan Manual Marquez, recently defeated by one, after having knocked out cold, the other, was also present.
Standing tall and unseen would be a fifth shadow, that of Floyd Mayweather, untoppled from his hill and less-than-gently reminding the 15,601 in attendance – not to mention the promoter – just whose house they were brawling in, whose city, and whose sport.
For 12 thrilling rounds, however, we might've forgotten all that – the unforgotten fight, the unbegotten showdown, the failure to negotiate – to sit back and enjoy a rare thriller between two of the second, perhaps third, best fighters in the world at welterweight, perhaps at any weight.
At stake was Bradley's WBO slice of the pie, which was formerly Pacquiao's, one (perhaps not so) clean record, a chance at retribution and the possibility that this could be it, for one or the other.
But it wasn't.
Evening the score and proving that almost anything can happen in Vegas – even justice – Pacquiao wiped clean, at least in theory, the 2012 controversial split decision loss to Bradley, by soundly, maybe not easily, winning the rematch.
The return bout topped an HBO pay-per-view, near-starless telecast promoted by Top Rank. This time around, same place, two years later, a brawl ensued. It was will over wit and clarity over controversy.
Clearly the house favorite, Pacquiao edged the opening rounds, showing superior speed and firing lefts at Bradley, who was caught somewhere between staggered and off-balance.
Digging into the trenches, Bradley sought to fire back in the third and fourth frames, briefly elevating a host of square-offs, from good to great. Swinging his right hand of a Louisville slugger and aiming for the fences, Bradley managed to dodge Pacquiao's nastiest lefts while finding a frightful home for his chief weapon. Right hand after right crashed into a staggered Pacquiao in the fourth, balancing the fight.
Both fighters had their moments in the fifth. Pacquiao picked his shots, brushing away any cobwebs but also misfiring a fair number of missiles. Bradley shook his head, as if to say, "No, you didn't get me – c'mon, bring it on."
Pacquiao did. In the sixth, Bradley danced away, waiting for openings with his home run punch. Both missed, but looking suddenly weary, Bradley let Pacquiao edge forward on the cards yet again.
In the seventh, it was Pacman dancing out of range. Bradley resumed the brawl, swinging downstairs, swinging up, bobbing and weaving out of harm's way and swarming Pacquiao late in the round. He remained on the warpath through the eighth, but the fight faded, just enough for the crowd to boo.
By the ninth, however, Bradley's finest moments had already been seen. Still looking fresh, Pacquiao took over the remaining rounds. Bradley stumbled twice, perhaps from a tangle of legs, while Pacquiao swarmed. One round later, Pacquiao hammered Bradley with his sizzling left, again harrying at the close.
Looking more like the beast that, once upon a time, battered Barrera and Morales and a host of others to submission, Pacquiao came at Bradley, who sought only a safe defense, at least in the 11th. In the final round, Bradley, stunned at least once, gathered what he had left and, a la Bradley-Provodnikov, gave a last-ditch effort. With just ten seconds left in the fight, a clash of heads had ref Bayless halting the action to give the ringside doc a look-see into a gash over Pac's right eye. The fight resumed, Pacquiao and Bradley brawled for the final moments and, when the bell clanged, both raised their arms for victory.
Unlike the first fight that resulted in a questionable split decision for the "wrong guy," this time around, the judges were not only in agreement, but actually had totaled it for the right man. Judges Craig Metcalf and Michael Pernick scored it 116-112 and Glenn Trowbridge, 118-110, all for Pacquiao. Fightnews.com was in agreement, scoring it 116-112.

This past Friday, Freddie Gibbs and Madlib performed 'Together On Stage...' at Echoplex in Los Angeles.  Nevermind the tremor that hit preceeding the performance, as Freddie Gibbs and Madlib were sure to shake up the Echoplex themselves.  At the helm of dropping their critically acclaimed album, 'Piñata' both Gibbs & Madlib treated the L.A. crowd with a rundown of cuts off it.  The MC-DJ duo worked well on stage, as Madlib would drop out of each cut and let Gibbs shine as he would finish off each track with an accapella rendition of it.  'Piñata' is most definitely an album worth copping as Madlib blesses Gibbs with an array of beats that would make any rapper salivate and relish the opportunity to spit over them.  Treat yourself to the album, which is out now on Rappcats http://www.rappcats.com/ and on iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/pinata/id826080165

Boxing In LA In Full Effect

Boxing in California, specifically the Los Angeles surrounding areas kicks off a great 2014 season with notable boxing cards coming up.  On April 26th in Carson at the Stub Hub Center, Golden Boy Promotions will present Keith Thurman vs Julio Diaz with Lucas Matthysse in the undercard.
On May 17th at the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, Juan Manuel Marquez will face Mike Alvarado in a stellar matchup.
On May 10th at Galen Center in Los Angeles, the rematch of Bermain Stiverne vs Chris Arreola will take place.  So indeed boxing will be making it's mark in Southern California in the next couple of months, and I hope to be in attendance on a couple of them.

Fight Reveiw: Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez v Alfredo 'El Perro' Angulo

Ringside by Miguel Maravilla
In a clash between two Mexican warriors, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, of Guadalajara, and Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo, of Mexicali, gave the fans plenty to make noise about, Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Displaying great hand speed and power, Canelo took it to Angulo for ten rounds, before the bout was stopped in controversial fashion by referee Tony Weeks.
Canelo landed a clean left hook on ”Perro” in the opening seconds of the fight in round one to start things off, tagging a slow-starting Angulo with power punches throughout the round. The hand speed was evident in the second round as Alvarez landed a series of effective combinations on Angulo.
In round three, Angulo got started as he closed the gap, but Canelo continued to be effective with his hand speed and combinations, momentarily rocking Angulo. “Perro” continued to come forward in the fourth round despite getting tagged by Alvarez’s hand speed and combinations.
Alvarez continued to outbox in the fifth, using his jab and circling an increasingly aggressive Angulo. Canelo’s jab blinded Angulo, and solid straight rights rocked his head back time and time again.
The sixth round was all boxing for Alvarez as he jabbed and countered the increasingly battered Angulo, who continued to press though he seemed to be wearing down. El Perro showed heart despite getting outworked by Alvarez, who continued to press by outboxing his foe.
In round eight, Alvarez did his own version of the rope-a-dope when Angulo backed him up to fire away. Canelo weathered the storm, then turned it around,  unloading a series of combinations and going toe to toe, while everyone in the arena cheered on.
Alvarez countered Angulo’s aggression in round nine by tagging him with huge punches. By the tenth, as Angulo’s face swelled, ref Weeks had seen enough. After one of Canelo’s uppercuts snapped Angulo’s head back, Weeks stepped in to stop the fight at 47 seconds of the round, causing a mixture of boos and cheers throughout the arena.
With the win, Alzarez rebounds from his decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr., improving his record to 43-1-1, 31 KOs. Angulo gave Canelo all he can handle, but drops to to 22-4, 18 KOs, suffering his second straight loss.
