Fight Review: Canelo v Kirkland

Review by Dan Rafael
Rafael's remarks: One week after the ultra-disappointing Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao showdown failed to deliver -- especially given the record $100 cost of the pay-per-view (not to mention the outrageously priced tickets) -- Alvarez and Kirkland thrilled boxing fans with their sensational shootout on regular HBO with many tickets costing $10 and $25. The fight was a bargain for the extreme entertainment it produced thanks to two willing warriors. It was like the Marvin Hagler-Thomas Hearns middleweight championship fight in 1985 as Alvarez, the 24-year-old Mexican superstar, and free-swinging brawler Kirkland, a 31-year-old southpaw from Austin, Texas, charged at each other from the opening bell and went to war as the 31,588 in attendance for the first fight card in Minute Maid Park history cheered wildly for Alvarez, the overwhelming favorite.

Alvarez, a former unified junior middleweight titlist, whose lone defeat came by decision to Mayweather in 2013, the richest fight in boxing history until Mayweather-Pacquiao shattered the record, survived some rocky moments in the early going. Kirkland pinned him in the corner and let his hands fly in the first minute of the fight. But Alvarez, whose defense is underrated, picked off a lot of the shots with his gloves and arms, rolled with the shots and nailed Kirkland with a straight right hand to drop him for the first of three times. Kirkland showed enormous heart to make it out of the first round.
The action in the second round picked up where the first left off with the fighters looking for knockouts. But Alvarez, smarter, quicker and more poised, staggered Kirkland with a right hand early in the round, and the battle raged on. They stood toe to toe and traded heavy shots. Alvarez rocked Kirkland, whose punch resistance was not nearly as good as Alvarez's. With the crowd going wild, Alvarez, who had showed off a diverse arsenal of body punching, right hands and left hooks, dropped Kirkland for the second time with a right uppercut in the third round. Moments later, the fight was over as Alvarez creamed Kirkland with a right hand he never saw coming. The shot nearly spun Kirkland around and sent him sprawling to the canvas on his back as referee Jon Schorle waved off the fight at 2 minutes, 19 seconds. This was not only a knockout of the year contender but also a fight of the year contender. Just a great night for boxing fans who crave action.
According to CompuBox punch statistics, Alvarez landed 87 of 150 punches, an absurdly high 58 percent against defensively deficient Kirkland, and Kirkland connected on 42 of 197 blows (21 percent). Alvarez landed 60 percent of his power shots (79 of 132).
Kirkland, coming off a 17-month layoff, was working with new trainers Rick Morones and Bay Bay McClinton for the first time and likely the last time. Kirkland is undefeated with Ann Wolfe in his corner and now 0-2 without her. After the fight, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, the rap star and Kirkland's promoter, said he was going to make sure Kirkland and Wolfe were reunited for his next fight.
Alvarez is next expected to move on to a shot at middleweight world champion Miguel Cotto this fall on HBO PPV in perhaps boxing's biggest fight outside of a Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch. Their camps have a deal in place, but Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) has a dangerous first defense ahead of him against Australia's Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs), a former titleholder, on June 6 at the Barclays Center in New York City. If Cotto-Alvarez comes off, it figures to be a memorable and exciting fight between two of the best fighters in boxing, both of whom deliver excitement on a regular basis.

Fight Preview: Canelo v Kirkland

This Saturday May 9th 2015 at Minute Maid Park in Houston Texas, Saul ' Canelo' Alvarez squares off against James 'Mandingo' Kirkland in a Middleweight showdown.  This fight is set to possibly set off fireworks due to the engaging styles of both Canelo and Kirkland.  Kirkalnd has been in hiatus as of late not being as active as one should be to be relevant in the game.  As for Canelo, he is now a top notch attraction that can draw big crowds in his fights.  Both men are at stake, especially Canelo, who is, and should be the favorite coming in to this match.  Kirklalnd though, possesses a high risk of possibly pulling the upset and beating the well-liked Canelo.  Each fighters will would have to be displayed in order to be victorious in this highly anticipated fight.  Kirland's unpredictability as to what "Mandingo Warrior" will show up, one who shows an unrelentless pace that puts fighters away, or one that will show ring rust due to their un-activity.  Canelo must step up to the plate and continue to engage in a fan-friendly affair, one that can possibly provide fireworks during the match.  This fight is a can't miss showdown.  Canelo vs Kirland will be televised on HBO's Boxing After Dark at 6pm PST live from Minute Maid Park in Houston Texas.

Noez Prediction:
Canelo Wins via 10th Round TKO

Fight Preview: Garcia v Peterson

In a Super Lightweight showdown, Danny "Swift" Garcia will face Lamont "Havoc" Peterson.  Although Garcia's Title won't be on the line, due to a 143 lb. catchweight, this match is still intriguing.  With Garcia hinting that this will be his last fight as a Super Lightweight before moving up to Welterweight, he will have a tough task in Peterson.  Both are coming off "weak" competition in their last fights coming into their own showdown, so both have much to prove.  Garcia is out to prove that he cleaned out the Super Lightweight division and is ready to become an elite fighter in the already stacked up Welterweight division.  Peterson is out to show that he too can become an elite fighter in the next level.  Expect good bout with someone possibly getting hurt in this one.  Garcia vs Peterson will be broadcasted tonight, April 11th, 2015, live from Barclays Center in Brooklyn New York on NBC at 5:30 PST.

In the undercard of Garcia v Peterson, Andy Lee will square off against Peter Quillin.  This bought was going to be for Lee's WBO Middleweight Championship, but since Quillin failed to make weight, the title won't be on the line.  This fight should also produce some hard hitting action.

On Pay-Per-View, Orlando "Siri" Salido put his WBO Super Featherweight Title on the line in Puerto Rico against Puerto Rican native Rocky Martinez.  Salido is no stranger to fighting in enemy territory as he has experience in coming to Puerto Rico and ripping out the hearts of Boricuas with upset wins against their native son Juan Manuel Lopez.  Look for another Mexican-Puerto Rican "War" when these two get in the ring tonight.

Noez Predictions:
Danny Garcia Wins by 8th Round TKO
Andy Lee Wins by 5th Round TKO
Orlando Salido Wins by 11th Round TKO

Video: Run The Jewels Feat. Zack De La Rocha-"Close Your Eyes (And Count To F**k)"

"When Run The Jewels sent me this track, I knew we had the opportunity to create a film that means something. I felt a sense of responsibility to do just that. We had to exploit the lyrics and aggression and emotion of the track, and translate that into a film that would ignite a valuable and productive conversation about racially motivated violence in this country. It's provocative, and we all knew this, so we were tasked with making something that expressed the intensity of senseless violence without eclipsing our humanity. For me, it was important to write a story that didn’t paint a simplistic portrait of the characters of the Cop and Kid. They're not stereotypes. They're people - complex, real people and, as such, the power had to shift between them at certain points throughout the story. The film begins and it feels like they have been fighting for days, they’re exhausted, not a single punch is thrown, their violence is communicated through clumsy, raw emotion. They've already fought their way past their judgments and learned hatred toward one another. Our goal was to highlight the futility of the violence, not celebrate it.”

For El-P of Run the Jewels “this is a vision of a seemingly never-ending struggle whose participants are pitted against each other by forces originating outside of themselves.”

Adds partner Killer Mike "this video represents the futile and exhausting existence of a purgatory-like law enforcement system. There is no neat solution at the end because there is no neat solution in the real world. However, there is an opportunity to dialogue and change the way communities are policed in this country. Salutes to AG Rojas for his unique take on the subject matter and to Shea and Keith for giving us their all and bringing it to life."

Fight Review: Alvarado v Rios 3

It is always something special when two warriors have a grudge match to settle the score.  Which is the case in this highly anticipated 3rd fight between Mike 'Mile High' Alvarado (34-3) and Brandon 'Bam Bam' Rios (32-2-1).  Both fighters have added there battles with some of the all-time rivalries in boxing history.  Although both boxers are coming off recent defeats and setbacks, all that can be thrown out the window knowing both will turn in a great and entertaining fight.  Leading up to the first fight, boxing fans relished at the anticipation, thus the case in now this 3rd fight.
Everyone knows Alvarado must and can outbox Bam Bam, but will he get the urge to trade and give his home town a treat?  Will the warrior in him overtake his game plan, one can only hope.  With Rios winning the 1st fight as both fighters went toe-to-toe, and Alvarado getting the best of Rios in the 2nd fight, by outboxing him, what will this 3rd fight have instore?  Questions will be answered as Mike and Brandon will try to set their careers back on track with a victory this Saturday night.
Rios will have to engage in a 'closed quarters' fight and exhibit good head movement and deliver body shots and work his way up to the head with hard upper cuts and overhand rights.  As for Alvarado, he must try to duplicate his boxing performance in the 2nd fight, establish his jab, keep lateral movement to get Bam Bam off balance, and deliver hard rights when the chance is there for him.  Despite the game plans, fight fans will be treated, no doubt, to an engaging action packed fight.  Get your popcorn ready for this one.
Alavarado vs Rios 3 will be broadcasted on HBO's Boxing After Dark this Saturday January 24th, 2015 at 9:45pm EST/ PST.

Noez Prediction: Rios Wins by 10th Round TKO
