Fight Review: Morales v Garcia/Kirkland v Molina

Here is the Fight Review brought to us by www.fightnews.com

Ringside by Felipe Leon
“He who knows when he can fight and when he cannot will be victorious.” – Sun Tzu, Art of War
If there is a man in the last twenty years who would be more than qualified to write boxing’s version of Sun Tzu’s Art of War, it would be Tijuana’s Erik “Terrible” Morales. The fighter from the tough neighborhood of the Zona Norte, has proven with superb skill, courage and bravado what a true warrior is and in a nineteen year pro career has won the hearts of his beloved Mexico’s fight fans as well thousands around the world.
On Saturday night, the thirty-five year old Morales (52-8, 36 KOs) walked out of the ring in his last hurrah, at least in the United States, on tired legs but his head held high as a little less than six thousand fans witnessed Philadelphia’s Danny “Swift” Garcia (23-0, 14 KOs) win the WBC light welterweight title via a unanimous decision at the Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas.

Kirkland Gets Win in Controversial Ending
James “Mandigo Warrior” Kirkland (31-1, 27KOs) remained undefeated after struggling with renown spoiler Carlos “King” Molina (19-5-2, 6KOs) of Chicago, Illinois, by way of the Mexican state of Michoacán, after a confusion at the end of the tenth round of a scheduled twelve caused Molina to get disqualified by referee Jon Schorle in a WBC Continental Americas super welterweight title fight.
From early on Molina began to attack the body of the southpaw Kirkland with a jabs to the mid section of the Texan. Kirkland looked sluggish and slow even before the body attack should have bore such fruit. Molina was able to couple his body work with hooks to the head from both fists as Kirkland struggled set his own offense while he concentrated in defending himself against Molina’s steady pressure.
Molina’s clinching, which by the end of the contest got to the point of being excessive, began early but really took effect in third as he would tie up the bulkier Kirkland and easily push him to the ropes. Kirkland had difficulty putting punches together and instead looked to score heavy punches one at a time. Kirkland’s first real dominating round was the fourth as he welcomed Molina with a left upper cut to start and began to put his punches together. Molina was still having success, especially with a straight lead right to the body followed by a left hook to the top that landed more than not in this round as well as in the previous three.
Kirkland began to apply the pressure even most of his attack came from arm punches. The crafty Molina was still able to set traps that Kirkland would walk right into especially a lead right that would catch Kirkland flush to the face more than once. With the crowd behind him with chants of “Molina, Molina”, Carlos kept fighting as Kirkland, and in the opinion of many referee Jon Schorle, made it easier for him to score punches and then clinch to avoid a counter attack. Kirkland showed his inexperience or frustration in the eight as he bent at the waist to avoid Molina’s punches but when he lifted his head, he did not raise his guard and Molina landed a series of power punches to the face that forced Kirkland to take a step back.
As Molina began to slow down, Kirkland ramped it up in the ninth and tenth rounds and began to really put punches together in classic Kirkland style. A quick lead left became Kirkland’s weapon of choice as he began to land it often and more effectively. Kirkland got inside and scored with upper cuts and short hooks from either fist. Molina’s clinches intensified and at the end of the round as Kirkland was scoring with a heavy assault, Molina went down to the canvas almost at the same time the bell signaling the end of the heat rang. Molina quickly sprang to his feet to indicate he was not hurt.
As referee Jon Schorle began to administer the count, a member of Molina’s corner tried to make his way through the ropes before being signaled by Schorle to make his way out. After Schorle reached the count of eight and made sure Molina was fit to continue, he made his way to the commission and asked for a ruling. He promptly walked over to Molina and waived the contest over, awarding the win to Kirkland by disqualification while Molina and his team protested.
At the time of the disqualification, Carlos Molina was up on two cards. Judge Dave Moretti had it 88-83 while David Sutherland saw it 87-84, both for Molina, while notorious judge Gale Van Hoy inexplicably scored it 86-85 for Kirkland. Fightnews at the time of the stoppage had it 87-84 for Molina.

Fight Preview: Morales v Garcia/Kirkland v Molina

Erik "El Terrible" Morales vs Danny "Swift" Garcia was supposed to be for Morales's 140 lb. title, but when Morales tipped the scale 2 pounds over the 140 lb. limit, his title became vacant.  Now, only Garcia can win the title if he defeats the ring legend in Morales.  This fight will be the classic, future hall-of-famer, Morales vs rising young star, Garcia.  Morales plans to "school" the young 24 year old Garcia, with not only technique but with an old fashioned butt whooppin'.  Garcia must rely on his technique & speed to get past Morales's for sure onslaught of combinations to the head & body.  Should be interesting to see if the old ring legend in Morales can beat up the young and spirited Garcia.
In The Undercard of Morales v Garcia, James "The Warrior Dingo" faces Carlos Molina, in what stacks up to be a fascinating fight.  Kirkland is coming off his huge win over Alfredo Angulo, where he survived a knockdown & onlaught by "El Perro" Angulo.  Kirkland turned the tables to punish Angulo in an all out brawl that Kirkland got the better of.  Molina has been on the shelf for about a year now coming off a victory versus Kermit Cintron in Carson, CA.  It's going to be interesting to see if Molina can withstand Kirkland's ruthless pressure & find a way to counter his overwhelming onslaught.  Molina seems like he can survive a few Kirkland rounds, knowing the he has a good chin to take some shots, but how much pressure from Kirkland can he take.  Molina doesn't seem to be a technician on the ring, turning this fight into a potential barn burner, in which Kirkland is custom to.  We may be in for a treat with this one folks!
It all happens tonight, live from Houston on HBO at 7:15 PM PT, don't miss it!

Noez Predictions:
Morales Wins by TKO 9 RD
Molina upsets Kirkland 12th RD Decision

& just for kicks, check out Danny Garcia's Dad during the weigh-in, jajaja!!!

Rios v Gamboa Out, Rios v Abril In

Brandon Rios v Yurokis Gamboa was supposed to be an interesting matchup, but for an unexplained reason, Gamboa decided to ditch the April 14th, 2012 meeting between the two at Mandalay Bay in Vegas.  During the first press conference, Gamboa left Rios hanging in his own backyard of Miami, Fl, eventually backing out of the fight altogether.  It was during that press conference where an altercation between Rios & boxer Richard Abril occured that has now set up a fight between these two.  It seemed a bit staged to me, especially now that they are matched up together to fight Apr. 14th.  But nevertheless, there will be a fight.
This is slated to be my first Vegas boxing match that I will attend.  Recently, it has been announced that this fight, along with the great Juan Manuel Marquez vs Ukranian Sergey Fedchenko, will be part of a split-site Pay Per View presented by Top Rank.  Mike Alvarado will also be in action in Vegas.  What seemed to be another cancelled card for me, has now turned into a possible great night in boxing, & I'm totally looking foward to being there in person to take in my 1st official boxing match.

Here is the altercation between Rios & Abril:

Salido v Lopez: Fight Review

Last night, the rematch between Orlando "Siri" Salido & Juan Manuel "Juanma" Lopez took place in familiar territory for both fighters, Puerto Rico.  Lopez was hoping to avenge his only defeat to Salido, where he lost by TKO in his hometown.  The fight took off after the first "feel-out" round, both fighters got really aggressive trading shots, especially the champion Salido, who fought like he was the challenger landing some big shots that had him seemingly winning the fight.  Lopez got a big knockdown in the late round of the 5th that left Salido wobbling back to his corner, it seemed as if Lopez was getting ready to control the fight.  Salido came back strong in the 6th & both fighters continued to forcefully trade with one another through the 8th round.  In the 8th, Salido brilliantly fought off the ropes where he countered & landed huge shots on Juanma.  Things were definitely boiling going into the 9th, where Salido attacked and applied pressure from the start of the 9th.  Lopez very valiantly stood his ground taking Salido's punishment, but also answering to Salido's onslaught.
These two warriors produced what has got to be the "Round of the Year" thus far in 2012.  Back & forth action with each fighter trying to impose there will into the fight.  Salido seemed to get the better of Lopez, who clearly was feeling the punishment brought on to him by the champion.  Fans roared as the completion of the 9th round left them knowing that they were witnessing something special.  Though their beloved hometown kid Lopez was starting to fade away, the action that these two were producing reminded them why this Mexico v Puerto Rico rivalry could possibly be the best in their respective sport.  The 10th round saw Salido land a vicious cross that numbed Lopez leaving him vulnerable to catch a couple of Salido uppercuts that landed him to the floor.  Lopez wobbled to his feet, where he would clearly stagger some more forcing the referee to call a halt to the fight, and having Orlando "Siri" Salido defending his championship, what a fight!

DJ Rob Swift announced the “Roc for Raida” mixtape, which is dedicated to the memory of fellow X-Ecutioner Roc Raida (May 17, 1972 – Sept. 19, 2009).
