Fight Review: Rios v Abril
In a night that started with 1st round knockouts & stoppages by the preliminaries in action, the main event card was properly set up. Mercito Gesta didn't do much to impress, but did wound up stopping Oscar Cuero after an 8th round TKO. The fight of the night was between Mike Alvarado v Mauricio Herrera, from the beginning of the opening bell, these two warriors pounded one another with tremendous flurries. It seemed that Herrera would try to steal rounds by turing on his offensive display in the last :30 seconds or so. Mike Alvarado proved to be the stronger of the two while delivering the more powerful shots in the back and forth fight. Alvarado got the decision by outlasting Herrera by scores of, 99-91, 97-93, 96-94. Definitely a Fight of the Year candidate. In the co-main event, Brandon Rios had difficulty trying to figure out the witty Richard Abril. Rios looked confused, as Abril outboxed Bam Bam for the latter part of the fight, Rios had no answer. In a stunning decision, Rios got the victory by scores of 115-113, 116-112, & what many people saw it, 111-117. This was truly a robbery in part of the two judges that scored it for Brandon Rios, further proves that boxing has alot of problems in it's sport and I witnessed it 1st hand. In the main event, ring legend Juan Manuel Marquez outscored the Ukranian, Sergey Fedchenko to claim the interim WBO Junior Welterweight title. Scored were 119-109, 118-110, 118-110, as the Mexican Legend out boxed Fedchenko.
