Fight Review: Ortiz vs Lopez, Soto vs Matthysse

This past Saturday I witnessed a great night of boxing at Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA.  The main event between Victor Ortiz vs Josesito Lopez was supposed to be the warm-up fight for Ortiz to prepare for 'Canelo' Alvarez in September, but Lopez had other plans in mind.  In the first few rounds, Ortiz set the tone as he outboxed Lopez.  Josesito attempted to steal rounds by turning it on in the last few seconds of each round, but it was after the 5th round where, Lopez's will & determination took over the fight.  Lopez began landing big punches on Ortiz, including some huge uppercuts in the 7th round, that began the problems for Ortiz.  Despite being knocked down by an Ortiz illegal shot to the back of the head that sent Lopez down to the canvas, Lopez would persevere down the stretch of the fight.  Lopez went heads up with Ortiz producing an action-packed fight that had us to our feet as were witnessing an unexpected fight, brought on by Josesito.  In the end, Ortiz couldn't answer the bell after the 9th round, as he complained of a damaged jaw, Lopez would pull the unbelievable upset that had all of Staples in shock and rooting for the underdog, Josesito Lopez.  What a fight by both the warriors, Ortiz & Lopez.  Josesito now throws a wrench into the 'Canelo' fight in September, leaving him without an opponent, for the time being.

In The co-main event, Soto & Matthysse also put on a show.  Soto started early as he put together beatiful combinations on Matthysse.  The fight brought in back & forth action as well, as Soto & Matthysse lived up to the hype.  Matthysse began landing big shots to the body & head of Soto that proved to wear down the Mexican fighter.  Matthysse landing a huge right cross that staggered Soto to the ropes and ultimately to the canvas as the bell to the 5th round came to a close.  Soto would beat the count, but once in his corner, they decided to put an end to the fight, as Soto could not continue, due to Matthysse's damaging power.  Great Junior Welterweight action indeed, where Lucas Matthysse now sets himself up for a possible championship title fight.

This past Saturday proved that despite controversial decisions, boxing can survive by having fighters step in the squared circle and perform to their best abilities to give that fans a great show, and that what all the boxers on this card did, their were no fights that went the distance.  Each fight ended in a KO or TKO that had the fans at Staples Center enjoying every minute of it.  It was a great night of boxing indeed.

FIght Review: Ortiz v Lopez, Soto v Matthysse

On Saturday June 23rd 2012, Victor Ortiz returns to action versus Josesito Lopez.  Ortiz is coming off a controversial loss to Floyd Mayweather, and a bizarre ride with Andre Berto.  Berto tested positive for a banned substance & Ortiz had to instead face off against Josesito Lopez.  So here we are, & just a few weeks ago Golden Boy Promotions announced that Ortiz is slated to fight Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez on September 15th 2012, if he gets past Lopez, of course.  So clearly, Lopez is coming in to the fight as the underdog.  Ortiz will be the bigger and stronger fighter who will use his size and strength to try and get past Lopez.  Lopez must try to outbox Ortiz, but I don't see Josesito staying away from Ortiz, instead, I think he will try to get into a brawl that I think will end up leading to his own demise.  If it does turn into a brawl, Ortiz has got to be the favorite due to his track record of being in some pretty awesome brawls, ie, Maidana, Berto & of course Mayweather.  I expect some fireworks, although I think Ortiz will make quick work out of Josesito.
**Noez Prediction: Ortiz wins by 5th Round TKO

A fight not be overlooked is the fight between Humberto Soto vs Lucas Matthysse in the undercard of Ortiz v Lopez.  This fight has the potential, and is expected to be 'Fight of the Year' candidate.  Soto has a track record of being in fights that produce non stop action, ie, versus Urbano Antillon.  Matthysse is a standard Argentinian boxer who likes to mix it up using his power to undermine his opponents.  This fight has the making of becoming the perfect storm that will probably 'steal the night' at Staples in Los Angeles this Saturday.  Don't blink when the bell of the 1st Round goes off, because this fight promises to be special.  Don't miss the fights on Shobox on Showtime at 7pm.
**Noez Prediction:  Soto by Split-Decision

Fight Review: Chavez Jr. vs Lee

The fight between Julio Cesar Chavez vs Andy Lee resulted exactly how I predicted it to go.  Chavez made his way to the inside, while Lee kept his distance to try to outbox Chaves Jr while utilizing his jab.  From the 3rd round on, Chavez made his home in the inside while attacking Lee's body with great body punches.  Lee made a valiant effort taking some of Chavez's furies that would have crippled many other boxers, but in the end, Chavez's great body work proved to be too much for the Irish fighter to take.  Just like I predicted, a 7th round TKO by Chavez Jr who finished Lee with a crushing right hook to the head that damaged Lee forcing the referee to put a halt to the bout.  A great display for Chavez Jr. to defend his WBC Middleweight Title, despite being down by 4 rounds in all of the 3 judges scorecards.  So now, according to Top Rank, the date is set for Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to face Sergio Martinez in a clash of Champions on September 15th 2012 in Las Vegas.

Fight Preview: Chavez Jr. vs Lee

Tonight Julio Cear Chavez Jr defends his WBC World Title against Irish Andy Lee at The Sun Bowl in El Paso Texas.  The fact that the fight is taking place in Texas has me a bit worried by the simple fact that funny business always seems to hinder fights in that state.  I'm hoping for a fair fight between these two young fighters.  Chavez Jr is looking to escalate his status in the fight game by putting up a great performance against Lee.  Andy Lee will try and prove that he is no push over & try to upset the Mexican Champion.  I expect Chavez Jr to eventually work his way to the inside & work the body of Lee, he seems to be comfortable in close quarters.  Lee must try to outbox Chavez Jr. maybe keep his distance and work his jab.  If Lee decides to trade with Chavez Jr., it may work itself to be a great fight, one that may favor Chavez Jr. due to his great inside work.  Chavez Jr. still keeps himself open for Lee to sneak in some power punches, but Chavez Jr. has proven to have a good chin & take some hard punches in stride.  The table is set for a Texas showdown tonight on HBO's Championship Boxing at 7pm, don't miss it.

**Noez Prediction:
Chavez Jr defeats Andy Lee by 7th Rd. TKO

Bump of the Day:
While messing around with the cam on my old macbook, i decided to tie my Aisics(Tiger Onitsuka) while listening to smooth sounds of 'Lover's Carvings (Latherette Remix) by Bibio. Coincidentally I finished lacing up my 1st shoes exactly when the song ended, I thought that was really cool.

Fight Review: Pacquiao vs Bradley

Well what was supposed to be a somewhat of a 'tune-up' fight for a possible 4th fight with Juan Manuel Marquez, or a dream fight with Floyd Mayweather, ended up being one of the most controversial decisions in boxing history.  Manny Pacquiao seemed to have the fight in the bank after outworking & frustrating Timothy Bradley.  All seemed set for another Pac Man victory, but once Micheal Buffer announced that there was a 'split-decision', a horrible decision seemed inevitable.  Sure enough 2 of the judges scored the fight in favor on Bradley, I couldn't believe the decision, even though I was contemplating placing a bet on Bradley to win by decision because I liked the odds, but for Pacquiao to lose the fight on the judges horrible call made me nearly sick to my stomach.  I've seen horrible calls made before, especially this year, Campillo vs Cloud, Abril vs Rios in which I was there in person to see the robbery.  To strip Pacquiao of his title the way those 2 judges did, was definitely foul.  The mainstream media, once again is claiming that boxing is in danger of dying out, which I disagree, but calls like this definitely help to prove them right.  I'm in favor of having some sort of structure that will help prevent episodes like this occur again, it really does mark the sport in a very negative way.  I've read a few conspiracy theories on why this horrible decision was made.  Despite the decision, I still believe Manny Pacquiao is in the top tier of pound for pound best boxers, and Bradley still has to prove himself of being an elite up and coming superstar.  All this fight proved was that something must be done to the sport of boxing to prevent things like this ever happening again, and quick.
